Job Summary

Murphy Oil Corporation is looking for a Staff Geoscientist for the subsurface development department to work operated and non-operated deepwater fields. The candidate must have demonstrated proficiency in constructing field models and experience in well selection, planning and operations. They should have expertise in Petrel together with an understanding of geologic models for field development, resource/reserve estimation and well trajectory planning is required.

The Murphy Staff position involves defining the scope and requirements of major projects, creating multiple effective and cost-efficient solutions for specialized technical opportunities, and drafting executive summaries or presentations on new issues. The role requires anticipating management's questions and responding effectively and strategically to their concerns. Additionally, this position may serve as a multi- discipline team lead on small to medium-sized projects and develop a working knowledge of other functions to better approach new opportunities.

Interpersonal skills are essential for this position. The role entails effectively representing the team's work to management, cultivating coaching and mentoring abilities to support junior team members, and exemplifying professional and ethical conduct. Additionally, it requires expanding one's influence beyond the immediate team, engaging with other teams within the area, and extending reach across various regions.

The Staff Geoscientist will work in our Houston Corporate office and may work two (2) days a week remotely.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret seismic and well logs, generate maps and cross sections to create geological understandings for assigned fields and conduct risk and reserve/resource analyses
  • Integrate data from different sources and construct geomodels in Petrel
  • Create facies and petrophysical models using different methods and algorithms
  • Perform well correlations, mapping and data analysis of different wells and sands
  • Interface with reservoir engineers for reservoir simulation modeling
  • Assess and recommend drilling new wells and infill wells
  • Present and make recommendations to management to support work
  • Pre-drill well preparation and planning. Interface with Drilling, Subsurface, Regulatory and Partners
  • Provide operations support in drilling/rig program and update field results and reserves as needed
  • Peer assists and reviews, collaborates both within and outside the team
  • Having extensive knowledge of discipline and multiple essential skills
  • Applying advanced professional knowledge and expertise in tasks requires more discretion
  • Showing proficiency and competency in a significant area, with a comprehensive understanding of related fields

Qualifications/Requirements
  • Masters in Geology or other geoscience discipline
  • Minimum 12 years' experience in oil and gas exploration and development
  • Experience in Deepwater Miocene and Wilcox reservoirs preferred
  • Experience in sedimentological and stratigraphic characterization of deepwater depositional systems, their facies distribution and reservoir quality
  • Expert in developing fit for purpose geological models using Petrel
  • Experience in integrating core, pressure, fluid, paleo and seismic into geological frameworks and models
  • Experience in developing depositional facies models through different stochastic and object modeling techniques
  • Experience in running uncertainty analysis
  • Experience in using seismic attributes in qualitative interpretation of sand distribution
  • Ability to work multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with operational well planning and execution
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs. The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
