MANAGER ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY (Engineering)



Job Summary

By effectively partnering with operations and other facility management leadership, the Manager Environmental Health & Safety advocates and assists in maintaining a safe and healthy working environment in a manufacturing setting.  This position is responsible for managing risk by inspecting work areas to determine potential safety and health hazards, identifying safety and health issues, reducing or eliminating unsafe working conditions, and ensuring compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations.

  • Provide leadership and direction around all safety and health regulations, policies, and procedures, and assure continuity and consistency of safety policies and procedures.
  • Assist in controlling hazardous working conditions and unsafe employee activities through collaboration with supervisory personnel.
  • Participate in developing and conducting safety and health training programs that are specific to the work environment and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Lead the investigation and root cause analysis process for safety and health incidents in a timely manner.
  • Work with Operations Management to drive safety and health awareness and create safe work practices by implementing programs and procedures.
  • Review and recommend the safeguards necessary for safety and health practices during the installation, implementation or modification of equipment or processes.
  • Conduct data analysis, communicate safety performance metrics and goals for operations, and regularly track and report progress against safety goals.
  • Evaluate and analyze injuries and related trends and work directly with Operations Management to perform root cause analysis and corrective action to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Proactively evaluation laws, rules and regulations applicable to the Company and work with the Director – Health, Safety and Security on program initiatives, development and implementation.
  • Perform inspections as it relates to storm water, wastewater, solid waste, industrial hygiene, air, etc.
  • Serves various leadership and support roles on Safety Committees and multiple cross-functional teams.
  • Serve as a primary resource for safety and health questions and concerns for employees, supervisors and managers.
  • Lead the industrial hygiene process to identify, measure, analyze and manage workplace hazards or stressors from chemical, biological, ergonomic, and physical exposures.

Expected Areas of Competence

  • Knowledge of the regulatory compliance required for the Federal, State and local governments related to Occupational Safety and Health and environmental regulations.
  • Well-developed logic and reasoning skills to recognize potential problems, draw conclusions and identify solutions.
  • Ability to communicate strengths and weaknesses of proposed solutions and propose alternative solutions.

Active listening skills, paying attention to understand others and asking questions to ensure clarity.

  • Knowledge of production processes, quality control, and operational procedures related to manufacturing.
  • Ability to access, analyze, enter, and otherwise work with information stored in or obtained through the company's computer system.
  • Effectively communicate with Operations, facility team members and third parties who have business dealings with facility operations.

This position description is intended to cover the most significant, ongoing job functions and competency areas. Successful performance in the role will require performing satisfactorily other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

 Ability to walk, stand, interact with employees and equipment on Plant floor for most of shift.

  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
