Sr Manager, Design and Construction (Lab Facilities) (Finance)

The Americas (AMR) Design and Construction Manager is responsible for leading the planning, design, and construction of all Illumina facilities paces in the Americas including laboratory and technical facilities. This includes renovations and new builds. This role ensures that projects align with scientific, regulatory, and operational requirements while being delivered on time, within scope, and on budget. The ideal candidate brings demonstrated success in leading teams in construction project management particularly in laboratory environments, including GMP, BSL, and research lab standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead end-to-end planning and execution of lab and facility construction projects, including renovations, expansions, and new builds.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders (scientists, lab managers, EH&S, facilities, and operations teams) to capture technical requirements and translate them into design plans.
  • Coordinate design reviews to ensure lab workflows, compliance, and equipment needs are integrated into layouts and utility planning.
  • Oversee contractor selection, procurement, and contract negotiations.
  • Oversee and manage a team to be effective and efficient in project feasibility studies and project cost/schedule estimating, drive business priority vetting, project approvals and manage executive expectations related to scope, schedule and budget.
  • Working with procurement, legal and finance, drive supplier management and contracting strategies that optimize delivery capability in alignment with business needs and good procurement practices.
  • Manage permitting, inspections, and compliance with local, state, and federal codes (e.g., building, fire, health, and environmental).
  • Monitor construction activities to ensure adherence to timelines, budgets, safety, and quality standards.
  • Develop and manage project documentation including budgets, schedules, change orders, and closeout reports.
  • Interface with vendors and consultants specializing in lab equipment, fume hoods, casework, cleanrooms, biosafety, and specialized MEP systems.
  • Coordinate lab commissioning and turnover processes, ensuring readiness for scientific operations.
  • Support long-range facilities master planning for lab infrastructure upgrades and capacity planning.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in construction project management, with at least 3 years leading teams of designers and construction project managers preferably in lab or technical facility environments.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory design standards (e.g., BSL, ISO cleanroom classifications, GMP).
  • Experience working in regulated environments such as life sciences, healthcare, biotech, or pharmaceuticals.
  • Familiarity with MEP systems for labs (HVAC, gases, DI water, fume hoods, etc.).
  • Proficiency in project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Procore, AutoCAD, BIM).
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and organizational skills.
  • PMP, CCM, or LEED AP certification is a plus.

The estimated base salary range for the Sr Manager, Design and Construction (Lab Facilities) role based in the United States of America is: $138,800 - $208,200. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual's qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
