Position Summary:

Participates in the day-to-day operations of the laboratory with regard to Electron Microscopy and provides quality preparation and ultrastructural screening of diagnostic biopsies for clinical ultrastructural pathology examination according to departmental procedures utilizing a specialized skill set and knowledge. Supports continuous improvement of laboratory services ensuring timely and high-quality results rendering ultrastructural pathological diagnosis.

Position Key Accountabilities:

Essential Functions

  • Processes and embeds patient biopsies received for ultrastructural pathology examination.
  • Performs ultramicrotomy to prepare semi-thin sections on a wide range of human tissue specimens: renal, muscle, nerve, heart, blood, fat pads, skin, and ciliary nasal scrapes, etc.
  • Prepares ultra-thin sections for ultrastructural screening.
  • Screens wide range of human tissue specimens (renal, muscle, nerve, heart, blood, fat pads, skin, and ciliary nasal scrapes, etc.) and digitally captures with electron microscope to aid staff pathologists in pathological diagnosis for patients.
  • Performs daily QC on all patient biopsy slides and grids. Assists with quality control standards in the laboratory.
  • Maintains proper working order of highly specialized Electron Microscopy instrumentation used for performing laboratory procedures while maintaining instrumentation logs and reports regarding equipment service, repairs, etc.
  • Complies with all departmental SOPs and adheres to all rules and protocols.
  • Conducts clinical and research testing in a clinical laboratory setting to provide professional and technical medical support to staff physicians.
  • Performs supportive duties, providing direction to a wide range of clinical staff to ensure efficient, high-quality test results. Instructs physicians and nurses in procedures for proper specimen collection and correct handling of request forms, provides training for clinical and research faculty and to medical residents while on rotatino in the Pathology Electron Microscopy Laboratory.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect performance of ultrastructural results and immediately notifies management team.
  • Utilizing SOP, prepares and performs QC of various solutions and reagents so that laboratory is well-stocked at all times ensuring quality ultrastructural pathology testing.
  • Maintains laboratory in a clean, functional state and performs scheduled equipment and instrument calibration/certifications as required.
  • Performs advanced troubleshooting of errors associated with specimen preparation and instrument failures.
  • Prepares whole peripheral blood for isolation of buffy coat received from Hematology.
  • Provides nerve teasing preparation for staff neuropathologist.
  • Maintains a secure proper filing system for all logs, records, digital images, semi-thins, ultra-thins, and specimen blocks. Helps maintain gross tissue storage area and assists in discarding tissue per established policy.
  • Assists manager in the management of laboratory functions including but not limited to assistance with new employee training, secondary oversight of clinical output, and supervision of personnel in lab managers absence.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Skilled in electron microscopy tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining techniques.
  • Ability to effectively identify subtle differences in tissue morphology at both light microscopy and ultrastructural levels.
  • Skilled in electron microscope operations and digital acquisition.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues in a laboratory setting.
  • Awareness of regulations and quality control standards (e.g. CLIA, CAP).
  • Health Services\ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologist Histotechnologist (HTL) certification required
  • Will accept training and experience meeting the requirements defined in CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489(b)(5) in lieu of HTL.

Minimum Education:
Bachelor's Degree in a related field required May substitute required education with equivalent years of experience beyond the minimum experience requirement.
Minimum Experience:
4 years of related experience required
Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
