Position Summary

Renovate and preserve homes for families in need of a decent place to live! You'll perform and manage others in the performance of tasks directly related to building and repairing homes, while upholding the standards of partnership, quality, safety, and team participation.

Construction Assistants are part of Habitat Charlotte's HabiCorps program and participate in required training.


Essential Functions (other duties may be assigned)

  • Assist in the preservation of affordable housing through home renovations.

  • Execute all aspects of renovating a Habitat house—from demolition to final inspections and punch lists.

  • Relate to volunteers and homeowners as a mentor and trainer, patiently instructing and encouraging others.

  • Promote partnership and communication among homeowners, staff, and volunteers.

  • Assist in planning each service day, ensuring resources (materials and people) are ready.

  • Follow Habitat Charlotte's Approved Methods Construction Manual.

  • Maintain Habitat equipment as assigned.

  • Complete assigned tasks on time with quality.

  • Demonstrate initiative, flexibility, and a willingness to learn.

  • Foster positive relationships with staff, volunteers, inspectors, and subcontractors.

  • Represent Habitat Charlotte in a positive, professional manner.

  • Maintain reliable attendance and adhere to schedule.

  • Uphold Habitat's Code of Conduct and policies.

Requirements

  • Interest and ability to serve alongside people from diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability to acquire and maintain knowledge of building standards and methods.

  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

  • Dependable transportation.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding and work at heights.

  • Ability to work in crawlspaces, tight areas, and wear a respirator as needed.

  • Ability to maneuver over uneven ground.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted.

  • Ability to stand most or all of the workday.

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions year-round.

  • Ability to communicate in person, over phone, and via computer.

  • Ability to occasionally work in an office setting (typing, reports, computer use).

Level of Authority

  • Responsible for execution of specific construction tasks and projects as assigned

  • No direct reports


Schedule

  • 40 hours per week

  • Monday–Friday, typically 7:00am–4:00pm (varies by season, weather, and project schedule)
