Job Summary

The Advisor, Reservoir Geoscience will be supporting maturation of drilling opportunities as a key part of the role, requiring close collaboration with a strong team of engineers and geoscientists to optimize development options while balancing risks and uncertainties within a fit-for-purpose value assurance framework. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise in geology and geophysics, with significant experience in interpretation techniques and static modeling. They should also possess a detailed understanding of the reserves process and economic analysis for accurate SEC reserve assessments. Execution of these roles may include direct involvement on a project but will often be through technical reviews and direct mentorship of other geoscientists to help build their technical skillsets over time.

The Geoscience Advisor will work in our Houston Corporate office and may work up to two (2) days a week remotely.

Responsibilities

  • This position will report directly to the Subsurface Vice President and will work with Subsurface Leadership to help ensure technical consistency and competency across the delivery teams.

  • Conduct detailed geological and geophysical interpretations and build fit-for-purpose geomodels that support development, new venture and/ or exploration activities.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to create development plans for deepwater fields that incorporate risks and uncertainties in the development decisions.
  • Play a critical role in technical evaluation of investment opportunities, both internal and new ventures, as an active participant in both technical discipline and cross-functional peers reviews as projects and drilling/workover programs mature through the value assurance workflow. Focus areas will be to understand the reservoir behavior, well design, expected production performance, project economics, and provide the appropriate feedback and documentation as required.
  • Keep up to date on industry best practices and emerging technologies, making recommendations on how to improve our business through updated processes and new technology implementation.
  • Able to effectively tailor and deliver the main message on a given subject to the target audience, which includes the technical team-up through senior levels of management within Murphy or partners. When communicating team results to management and partners, acknowledge contributions of others.
  • Understand and support larger organizational objectives and metrics, helping translate how those objectives are supported at a technical level to others within Subsurface.
  • Value quality data and transparency, supporting initiatives to continually improve how data is stored, integrated, accessed, and analyzed.
  • Lead by example when supporting Murphy's Mission, Vision and Values in terms of behavior and interactions with other professionals both internally and externally.
  • Exhibit effective conflict resolution skills and serve as a role model in professional and ethical behavior.
  • Develop organizational talent that consistently delivers strong technical and economical projects that meet or exceed defined metrics while employing innovative techniques and processes.
  • Be a technical leader helping to develop junior staff on geology and geophysics concepts, interpretations and modeling best practices. Provides direction on training classes and experiences needed to complement in person coaching sessions and improve the technical expertise of staff.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Master's degree in Geology or Geophysics
  • Minimum 20 years' experience in Geology or Geophysics with 15 years of experience with reservoir characterization, field development studies and uncertainty analyses, with various offshore basins of which a minimum of 5 years spent on deepwater assets

  • Demonstrated experience with Petrel, Kingdom, Paleoscan, RoseRA, Power BI or similar software packages

The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/ extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs. The successful candidate must be able to complete all essential physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of experience with deepwater development geoscience, GOA deepwater experience preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working with cross-functional teams to mature opportunities to support drilling and workover programs
  • Experience constructing static geomodels, interpreting pre-stack data, AVO analysis, time-lapse/4D seismic, and seismic inversion is desired
  • Experience with seismic reprocessing, basin modeling, volumetrics, and petroleum systems analyses/risking is a plus
  • Knowledge of SPE-PRMS and SEC reserves guidelines, particularly how to incorporate uncertainties into reserves bookings
  • Demonstrate the ability to thrive in a team environment placing the team's needs ahead of the individual
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment is essential
  • Risk assessment utilizing statistical software such as RoseRA is beneficial
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
